We live in a culture that says we are not responsible for the choices we make, that it's always someone else's fault, but never your own responsibility. I beg to differ. God says He gives us free will. We have the free will to choose whatever we want - to believe & trust Him as our Savior, to not. We have the free will to worship whomever we please. We have free will.
Now, things in one's society may say we don't have complete free will. If you wanted to drive 100 mph through a school zone, if you choose to do that, then there is a consequence for that and it's not a good one. Well, maybe it's the car's fault that you drove so fast through that area because, after all, it's a red Maserati and those cars as made to go fast. It's the car manufacturer's fault for allowing the car to be able to get to that speed.
Or, how about this? That person made me mad, so I took this course of action to punch the wall. It's that person's fault that my hand is broken and that there is a hole in the wall. If the person hadn't made me mad, then it wouldn't have happened. Well, you could have chosen a different response. Walked away. Took some deep breaths. Wait until you calmed down then respond by talking calmly. Shoot the person. Take a bat to that person's cherished items. All those are choices that that person could have taken other than punching the wall. And there are many other good and bad choices that the person could have taken.
We are responsible for the choices we make and how we choose to respond to any situation. There are always consequences to our choices. And, sometimes not even making a choice, there can be good or bad consequences that come with those.
In Romans 14:10, it says that one day we will all each stand before God and give an account of the choices we made. We can try to blame someone else, but to me, that's clear that you are responsible for the choices you make in life. Probably the most famous case for this in the Bible is between Adam and Eve. God, if you hadn't given me this woman, I wouldn't have eaten that apple. Blame shifting. God didn't buy it and the consequence is forever banished from the Garden of Eden and to have a hard life.
If this is a problem for you, as it's been a huge problem of mine, repent. God will forgive you, but you must also turn from that sin. Ask for Christ's healing to cover all those sins & trauma that it caused.
I've now come to realize I made so many wrong choices in my life, but the God of all Creation has forgiven me and He's changing me, transforming me into the woman He desires as I take personal responsibility for all my choices and ask Him to take the reigns in my life. Not easy, but through Christ, all things are possible (Philippians 4:13).
